december 12: I am playing a show on NYE at the Tranzac in Toronto. It has been a loooog time since I've played a "Jim Guthrie" set and I'm pretty excited about it. It will be a full band including Nate Lawr on drums, Samir Khan on bass, Jordan Howard on guitar, Shaw han Liem on keys, Jeremy Strachan on saxamaphone, Randy Lee on violin and Nick Buligan on trumpet. We'll be playing mostly oldies but everything old is new and it'll be a great way to end the decade, right?

december 3: I have always loved video games and I've always thought of them as "art". I've also always thought of them as having as much potential as any song or album- artistically, personally or culturally. I am very lucky to be involved in a new project along side the "eyegasm inducing" superbrothers and the "thumb-crippling" capybara games. Who knows where all of this synthetic sworcery will lead but here's your first look:

april 11: Just finishing up the music for a new documentary film entitled when we were boys(view trailer).

At an elite private boys school, students make and lose friends, create a pecking order, and begin their individual paths to manhood. The adolescent culture of boys lies beneath the surface, an emotional world often unspoken to each other or to the adults around them. This sensitive observational story unfolds over two years through the experiences of Noah and Colin, two friends since grade school.

Director Sarah Goodman (Army of One, Best Canadian Feature Documentary at Hot Docs, 2004) follows the boys as they navigate from grade eight to the senior school, playing video games, singing like angels in the choir, and alternately goofing off or napping in class. Watching the boys study Lord of the Flies with an inspired English teacher is fascinating. Emotional struggles flicker beneath the surface as the pecking order they establish takes its toll on their friendships. The way each negotiates the culture of boys begins to define the leaders, fathers, and men they will become.

When We Were Boys will debut at Hot Docs 2009!

Screening dates:

Fri. May 1, 2009 9:00pm @ Cumberland 3

Sun. May 10, 2009 4:00pm @ Bloor Cinema
